Whitley Bay Old Mining Void
North Shields, Northumberland

A subsurface laser scan survey of an old mining void at Whitley Bay for Dunelm Geotechnical & Environmental & Kier.

subsurface laser scan survey

The Brief

Dunelm Geotechnical & Environmental and Kier appointed Geoterra to carry out an as-built 3D subsurface laser scan survey of a void discovered beneath the promenade at Whitley Bay in North Shields, Northumberland

The survey data was required by Kier to enable them to assess the size and location of the void beneath the promenade prior to a sea front development.

The Solution

Access to the voids was provided via a cased borehole from the surface drill rig to the top of the voids. Geoterra experienced team of geospatial engineers utilised a specialist C-ALS laser scanner and carried out a 3D subsurface laser scan survey of the void. The survey was geo-referenced to OSGB 36 and Newlyn GPS level datum.

The Deliverables

Geoterra provided Dunelm Geotechnical & Environmental and Kier with a geo-referenced 3D laser scan point cloud of the void beneath the promenade and an updated topographical survey plan. CCTV imagery was also provided from the C-ALS. An assessment could then be made to determine if additional boreholes were required to survey any additional voids and how to remediate the voids prior to sea front development.
