Geoterra speaks at South Wales Safety Group Alliance Annual Conference
Geoterra recently took part in the South Wales Safety Group Alliance Annual Conference held on Wednesday, 2nd April 2025, at Cardiff City Stadium.
The event marked 50 years of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and focused on the theme “Health and Safety – The Way Forward.” It brought together over 150 delegates from a wide range of industries to discuss the latest developments in workplace safety.
We were proud to exhibit at the event and to have our Managing Director, Mark Hudson speak about the use of drone technology in hazardous environments.
His presentation, titled “Remote Survey Operations in Inaccessible and Hazardous Areas Using Drones,” was held after lunch and was well received.
Mark talked about how drones are helping to make surveying safer by removing the need for people to enter confined or dangerous spaces. He shared a recent example of a drone survey carried out at a lead mine drainage adit in Cwm Rheidol, Ceredigion. This site would have been too risky for a person to enter, but drones allowed the survey to be completed safely and accurately.
“Using drones means we don’t have to send people into places where there’s a risk of collapse or other dangers,” Mark said. “We can still get the data we need, but without putting anyone at risk.”
Hazardous areas we often work in include adits, tunnels, culverts, caves, containers, silos, and collapsed buildings. In these types of places, drones or remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) are much safer alternatives to traditional surveying methods.
Mark also explained that flying drones in tight or restricted areas comes with challenges, especially when access is limited. It takes a skilled operator to handle the equipment in these conditions.
Throughout the day, the Geoterra team spoke with many attendees at our exhibition stand. We had a lot of interest in our services and have already received several enquiries since the event.
Thank you to the South Wales Safety Group Alliance for organising a great day, and to everyone who visited our stand.
